Although we’ve been working with clients on improving employee engagement for a number of years, we’ve never come across quite such a global and impactful phenomenon as what has become labelled as ‘The Great Resignation’.
Whilst it has been attributed to the pandemic bringing about a sudden rise in job-quitting, the reality is that many of the issues employees raise when handing in their notice long pre-date Covid-19.
Second, it’s less of a ‘Great Resignation’, and more of a ‘Great Reassessment’ - not everyone is choosing to leave, but rather taking the moment of Covid to take a hard look at their career, work-life balance and aspirations, to see whether some changes need making. That could be going to part-time, switching to a different area of a the same industry sector, or adding a solopreneur gig alongside their salaried job.
The bottom line is that the issue is complex, multi-threaded and getting acres of attention, both from employers and the media.
